第35話：fireworks

「たまや～！」「かぎや～！！」

・・・といえば、日本ではおなじみ？の掛け声だよね。

これらは江戸時代の有名な花火師の屋号に由来する、って先日クイズ番組で紹介されてたっけ・・・・

で、今回の話題は「花火をみての外人のリアクション」について。

どうやらMina先生とMarilou先生は、由比ヶ浜の花火大会がちょうどふたりの休日に重なったもんだから楽しんできたらしい。

さあ、今回のブログはMina先生がまとめてくれたよ。さっそく読んでみよう！！

How to react in English

Summer means festivals and fireworks! If you checked our Instagram and Facebook account, you might have seen my recent update about the fireworks showcase in Yuigahama beach. Teacher Marilou and I always look forward to these fireworks showcase every year. Our days off are quite unique so we are most likely to miss festivals. That day was perfect! As you know, July has brought us only rainy days for the past weeks but surprisingly, the skies stopped crying for a while and allowed the event to successfully take place.

I figured writing a blog about expressions on how you can react on something good (or bad) in English. I have divided into three parts the first one being (a) exclamatory phrases; (b) how + adjective; (c) what + noun.

Let’s dive right in!

a.       Common exclamatory phrases

While we were watching the fireworks, we exclaimed a bunch of expressions like:

Wow!

Amazing!

Wonderful!

Incredible!

Oh, my gosh!

Oh, my goodness!

Beautiful!

Spectacular!
Marvelous!

Two more ways to describe an event happening at the moment, a scenery or even a performance are the two following patterns:

b.      How + adjective

How beautiful!

How awesome!

How interesting!

How cool!

How nice!

c.       What + noun

What a show!

What a performance!

What an outfit!
What a day!

You can also add an adjective before the noun to describe something more effectively.

What an incredible show!

What a great actor!

What a powerful voice!

What a terrible day!

What a messy room!

英語でのリアクション

夏といえば「お祭り」と「花火」！
私たちのインスタグラムやフェイスブックをチェックしてくれている人は、私達が由比ヶ浜の花火大会に行ってきたことをすでに知っているよね！

Marilouと私は毎年「花火大会」を楽しみにしてるんだ。でも私達の休日は週末じゃないのでお祭りにはなかなか巡り会えないの。でもこの日は完璧！7月の数週間、雨ばっかだけど、その日は雨がなんと降らずに、花火大会が行われたの！！

そこで、今回は（花火を見ての）驚き（つまらない場合も含めて）を英語でどう表現するかを題材にブログをかきました。３つのパターンにわけてみたのでさっこく見てくださいね！

A:一般的な「驚き」をあらわす言葉

花火を見てるときに、私達はこんな言葉でその美しさを表現したわ。

Wow!

Amazing!

Wonderful!

Incredible!

Oh, my gosh!

Oh, my goodness!

Beautiful!

Spectacular!
Marvelous!

・・・さらに「景色」や「パフォーマンス」を表現する方法には以下の２パターンがあるの。

B:How ＋ 形容詞

How beautiful!

How awesome!

How interesting!

How cool!

How nice!

C;What ＋ 名詞

What a show!

What a performance!

What an outfit!
What a day!

・・・さらには名詞の前に形容詞をつけてみると、より表現力がゆたかになるね。

What a messy room!
