第30話：英文法（その１）

Bossです。

もう10年になるけど、Bossは娘や息子が中学生になり英語を学び始めたときに、一緒に英語の勉強をはじめたんだ。

それ以来、子どもたちの使う参考書を拝借しての勉強が続いてるんだけど、そのなかで今もお世話になっているのが、これ！

もってない生徒さまにはぜひおすすめしたい英文法参考書です。

当時は「Forest」っていうタイトルだったんだけど、その最新版「Evergreen」（中身はほぼいっしょです）。

英語の中上級者でも、「あれ？」って思ったときに読み返すと、「なるほどそうだったな！」ってなるはず。

最初っから読むのもよし、調べたいところを索引から見つけ出すのもよし、英文法の基本がしっかりわかりやすく詰まっているとおもいます。

最近では、Mina先生やMarilou先生も、生徒様にいわゆる「日本式の英文法」を教えるのに参考になるみたいで、この本を借りに来るくらい。とても良いです！

（たぶん学生のみなさまは、学校で購入必須になっているんだろうな・・・）

さあ、ご家庭にこの1冊、英語学んでいるならぜひ調達しちゃいましょう！！

※次回は、これの上級版としてもうひとつおすすめしたい本があるので、それを紹介予定！

第29話：桜の木の下で

Bossです。

桜が満開のある日、エクセルイングリッシュの前にある「相模女子大学」のキャンパスから送る、先生から生徒のみなさまへの動画＆レターメッセージ。

EXL Talks: What do you like most about spring?

Spring is such a wonderful time of year when you’re all bright and happy about how everything is in color once again.

 In this clip, Teacher Mina and Teacher Marilou talk about what they like most about this season. 

Watch the video to find out and read on to learn some useful words and expressions.

The first thing we all love about spring is that it is warmer and people can spend more time outside.

The weather is warmer and the flowers are in bloom.

People enjoy cherry blossom viewing.

Teacher Marilou talks about how she likes the breeze of Japanese spring.

 She is a fan of its ‘earthy’ scent which means she likes the hint of fresh leaves, wood and the ground in it. 

“I’m a big fan of earthy smells.”

The breeze in every season has its own unique smell.  

Each season has a distinct scent.  

Teacher Mina then talks about how spring might be her favorite season but feels like autumn is also a good choice. 

To be torn between two things means to find it difficult to pick one over the other. 

“I’m torn between spring and fall.”

Spring is a good time to start doing something new. 

It’s a season for new beginnings.

お花見が大好きな先生たち。「よみうりランドの桜がすばらしい！」ということで出かけたんだけれど、そこにはもっと魅力的な「絶叫マシーン」が！

Scream ‘Spring!’

It’s currently springtime and the earth is coming to life once more! As a way to celebrate this season, we went to Yomiuriland last weekend and spent the day cherry blossom viewing aboard fun-filled rides. Check out below how we spent our day at the theme park. Enjoy!

1.    We screamed at the top of our lungs on the free fall rides!  

To scream at the top of one’s lungs means to scream very loudly.

2. The loop ride literally turned our worlds upside down.To turn something upside down literally means, to physically invert someone or something.

※乗車直前まで、まさか360度回転するとは思ってなかったみたい。

3. The view from the Ferris wheel was truly breathtaking.

A Ferris wheel is an amusement ride consisting of a rotating upright wheel with multiple passenger-carrying components attached to the rim. 

観覧車からは富士山、都心、スカイツリーまで見渡せてご満悦！

4. The cherry blossoms have a different charm at dusk.

Dusk is the darker stage of twilight; sundown. 

夜になりやっとお花見タイムになりました。

5. We took a selfie underneath the pretty lights.

A selfie is a photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically one taken with a smartphone or webcam and shared via social media.
