What they don't tell you about Christmas in Japan(知らなかったよ!

The 5 things I realized about having spent 5 Christmases in Japan

Before getting my job in Japan, I never ruminated on the things I would have to give up to live here. I was all excited, positive and idealistic. Anyway, no matter how meticulous your plan is before working abroad, nothing will ever prepare you for the reality except---the reality.

Christmas is one of the major holidays that all Filipinos look forward to every year, no matter where they are. In our hearts, there is a warm feeling of joy, positivity and festivity all throughout this season. So as an expat, it is a shock to the system how Christmas is done here in Japan. What they didn’t tell me was…

#1 It’s going to be cold.
Depending on where you live, temperatures will go as low as under 5 degrees Celsius in December. As a Filipino, this type of temperature should be illegal. Taking showers in the morning is a torture. Riding the bicycle without gloves is a punishment. On the bright side, winter is indeed the perfect time to hibernate and stay cosy in your futon. Waking up early will be a challenge in the winter season…for me at least.

#2 Japanese DON’T CELEBRATE CHRISTMAS.
As depressing as it may sound, you heard me right. They don’t celebrate Christmas the way we do in the Philippines. Christmas Eve and Christmas day are both business as usual. In 2018, before the previous Emperor abdicated. His birthday used to be a national holiday which is on December 23rd. But that is no longer effective this year as the new Emperor is already crowned. But don’t get me wrong, the Japanese do have some sort of an observation of this day. They have a custom of eating “decoration cake” and KFC fried chicken on Christmas Eve. Kids also receive their presents from Santa on Christmas day. If you are planning on working in Japan someday, you had better expect a dry Christmas Eve and Christmas Day here.

#3 Christmas is more of an experience.
With shopping malls and major areas in Tokyo going out of their way to embellish the whole city with Christmas lights, people living in Japan would usually go out to see them on Christmas. Never have I seen such beautiful arrangements of LED lights covering a whole hill! These are perfect for families to see and also to visit for a romantic date, which leads me to my next point.

#4 Christmas is usually observed by romantic partners.
If you are in a relationship with someone who is also living in Japan, you are in luck because you’ll surely go out to a fancy dinner. Christmas isn’t a family-centered event in Japan. It’s more like Valentine’s in my perspective. It is a must to plan a delicious dinner at a beautiful restaurant. Some couples even get engaged on this day, or at least ladies expect to be.

 #5 Very, very commercialized.
Surely, businesses will take advantage of the gift-giving nature of Christmas to increase profits---which is true in most countries. But as a Filipino working and living in Japan, shops and stores actually remind me of how Christmas is in the Philippines too. This is also the time when we rush to malls to get presents for our family and friends. The noise, the rush and the crowd make feel like, “wow, it is indeed Christmas.”

For the past 6 years of living and working as a single woman in Japan, I have tried to manage my emotion and mentality whenever Christmas comes. I can say that it will be a struggle in the beginning but as the years go by, you will find people whom you will want to spend Christmas with. Over the course of those years, you will build relationships with people that will make you feel closest to home.

See you in the next blog!
